My apologies. I was only mostly kidding.

I understand the deep attachment that a human can develop with their pet(s). Letting go is always a terribly difficult thing, and even more so when you're weighing the value of that animal's life. Some people would have to make themselves destitute in order to stave off the guilt of "not trying hard enough." Perhaps, you could set a predetermined amount (say, $1,000), so that way there is an objective limit, free of judgement based value.
