Listener Mailbag: Out of iPad Jokes, Last Day Alive, Tod Smooths It Over
The iPad is mandatorily discussed, Tod's talents are called into service to help smooth out a wife's indiscretions, Marc sounds like James Stuart, what would you do with your last day on Earth and much more.

Marc, you say you want to watch your videos on your iPad. Do you buy all your videos from iTunes and nothing in .avi (of course ripped from DRM free home produced videos) or from an online provider such as Hulu, ABC or CBS? Well, not on this version of the iPad. Sure, it has potential - but you have to count on Apple being open, which they are not. Maybe in 5 years html 5 will have taken over and flash will be gone - but CBS still uses fucking Real Media streaming for Big Brother! Flash will not go away that quickly due to the evil power of the back end for tracking and ad insertion.
Until Apple opens up for full and open third party application installation the iPad will be nothing more than something pretty but crippled. I am sure that Apple has a plan, but I do not trust them to do what I want.
What I want is real USB, a real file structure, SD card slots, actual standard sim cards, back ground applications, wifi LAN sync, and a non-itunes structure that allows custom application rolling, sync, and third party installation and management. It would also be fantastic if it paired with a new Apple TV style DVR like a Slingbox. The ONLY thing they did right is allow bluetooth keyboard pairing. The screen is even the wrong size for video being that it is 4:3. All it is is a big iPod Touch. The only thing I use my iPod Touch for is the LBR application and as a Palm Pilot for my calendars. I would much rather spend a little more and buy a cheap MacBook plastic which can do SO MUCH more (like power a podcast or act as a sound board), run real applications and view all websites.
The iPad is a computer for women, gay men, and old people that want a digital picture frame that can send email.
iPad isn't for people who would say things like "DRM-free," "Apple TV-style DVR," etc.
Also for the record I do buy all my videos from iTunes. Though on occasion I've been known to pop a DVD into my Mac, use Handbrake to rip it, drag that file onto iTunes and sync it to my iPod.
Everybody bandies around DRM like iTunes still uses it for music, and like iPods/iPhones can't play almost any standards-compliant video file. It ain't hard to make an MPEG-4.
It is the application restrictions that bother me most. On my iMac, I mostly use Firefox, VLC, Audacity, and Adobe Air for Tweetdeck. I only use Mail and Calendar out of laziness. I simply refuse to allow Apple to dictate what software I am allowed to run on my device. Mind you, I also refused to buy DRMed music from iTunes when it was all they had.
It is a little different up here, iTunes only just started selling TV shows last summer in Canada, so we had a huge head start on NOT paying for tv shows, NOT watching them legally online or in a timely fashion. Also, you are a single guy. iTunes and the restrictions really become a pain when you have multiple computers and separate iTunes accounts. I guess I just reject entirely the 'licensed content over purchased" that you have embraced. They have brainwashed you into renting TV shows.
The iPad could have been so much more than just being a 10 inch iPod Touch. That is ALL IT IS. The only thing that makes it different is the wireless data capabilities. Maybe it becomes more like the iPhone, but it is just as likely to become the next Apple TV or Mac Mini: an afterthought for a niche market that could be dropped on a whim by a mercurial company.
+1 for use of the word "brainwashed" to describe content consumption
Nerds.
Tod rules!
Well, enjoy your giant iPod Touch then.
Are their any other products you use that I could be quadrupled in size and sell to you? How about a giant microwave?
Laxdude, I already sold Marc the giant mircrowave, washer & dryer. Someone else beat me to the giant tv.
Anyway, I'm thinking about becoming the unauthorized vendor of LBFM paraphernalia. LBFM Corporate doesn't scare me.
Next you're going to tell me there's a giant version of my 13" laptop.
Giant diapers it is then!
I am pretty sure that Dell made a monstrously big laptop a few years ago - something like a 27 inches.
Dagney,
Merchandise sounds much more legal than paraphanalia. Remeber what happened to Tommy Chong.
Whose the annoying cunt in the art for this ep, kinda looks like that girl from Thriteen who was also in the wrestler
Well you guys missed the point! The reason the iPad looks like an iPhone is because it is one. The iPad is Apple's foray into telephones for "big" people. In fact the half-ton man was the first beta tester for the iPad.
The half-ton man uses the iPad when he jogs?
Half-ton man can't jog. But he does need his iPad to tweet a ride from monkeypants.
The half ton man is still in the bed of my truck. The forklift broke getting him in there for the camping excursion and we can't figure out a way to get him out of there without causing excessive damage to the truck.
By the way, don't take a half ton man camping... that dude fucking destroyed the smores supply, and my mpg went to hell.
ClaptonTod is GodFan-effing-tastic episode.
What will the Low Budget Ap. look like for the iPad?
sometimes I'm not sure which is more funny - the podcast or the fan comments. LMAO at all you guys!
The Low Budget Ap for the iPad will have a big picture of Salwin looking like Big Brother from 1984.
In this show you referenced a band called the Adicts (or occasionally spelled by fans as adix or ADX) and wanted to know what they were about. They are a mid 70 british bunk band out of sulfolk. They bombed through the 70s having minimal sucess until the 80s when they started dressing like the droogs from a clockwork orange mashed up with the joker batman and started having their live shows fit this theme. In this golden period they became one of britian's most sucessful indie and punk bands mostly because they were still a legimate punk band, but offered a different ,more classic flavor than hardcore bands (i.e. black flag, minor threat, the misfits). In conclusion if you like bands such as the ramones, the sex pistols, the new york dolls or iggy pop and the stooges you will like these guys. ~~~~~One of their few legit fans
I'd also like to know what the Low Budget FM App for my iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch will look like. Sure, the existing app will run fine, but I'm only considering an iPad if my favorite app makes full use of the new display and A4 processor. Intern Murder minigame perhaps? "Real Time" Salwinlink (tm)?
