A Discussion of Pop Culture

Marc went to a Foreigner concert over the weekend and his friends have been giving him a lot of grief for being into the music. What is it about so-called pop culture that makes people feel guilty for being into it?

Two and a Half Men appeals to the niche of stupid people who don't enjoy comedy.
It is not surprising that Marc also went to a Jay Leno test show.

Diggin' the conversation. Would like to hear more from John Salwin though (just a suggestion).
Thanks, you guys.

Seriously when is this place going to be functional? is Marc just too busy and there is a learning curve using this non wordpress based site?

I say we all spell his name with a K until he gets his shit together, this new site is tantamount to rape, group rape, marc is a fanbase rapist.

I'll save my opinions on the ep in question until we have a real website or the old one back.

Marc - I think you see people who like indie culture only like the music because it is indie and that we hate all popular music. Personally, I love Pavement, but I also like U2, and many other massive bands.

P.S. Why don't you like Frosty, Heidi, and Frank?

Tod - As a fellow music lover, I agree with you 100%.

P.S. - Have you ever met a fellow Oasis fan. I've only met one person in my entire life whose appreciated the second coming of Beatles-esque rock.

Alexander, I’m a big fan of Brit-Pop (Blur, Oasis, Pulp, Supergrass, Manics, Stone Roses, Libertines…) and I’m not sure where you live, but in L.A. there’s like a whole Indie scene where they play it in clubs so you’d have to search it out to find others who are into it, but it’s not like totally underground.

Art up your perv is what the National Endowment of the Arts has been doing for decades! The more perverted the art, the more money you get.

I LOVE FOREIGNER!!!

I would submit that PGP is the "Two and a Half Men" in Marc's analogy (runs).

I love how no matter what show you enjoy there is always at least one dude who has to come by and bring up another show over and over again, this happens on the ACMB daily, people who actually like entertaining shows don't seem to ever do that, I don't give a fuck what listeners of other shows think about LBfm, in fact it's a compliment if certain people don't like the show, it means you're doing something right.

Also this album art is faggy.

stop hating on the site ppl clearly there has been changes lately and there are probably more planned..... though i gotta say, episodes were getting longer and longer over time up to 45 mins a week or so ago, why are we shrinking the eps? got a hunger for low budget that needs to be satisifed..... good ep tho

Jesus Effing Christ.

This was painful to listen to. I wanted to throw my ipod through a god damn window.

By Marc's RETARDED logic about things that are popular being "objectively better," that means that "Titanic" is the best movie ever made, last week's Vikings/Packers game was the best thing ever on Cable TV, and that "Quotations From Chairman Mao Zedong" is a better book than anything Shakespeare, Dickens, or Tolkein wrote combined! For that matter, we shouldn't watch baseball, because it's so much more "obscure" than NASCAR. Eff you.

For some reason, Marc seems to think that TV, Movie, and Music Executives are BRILLIANT people. They aren't. Appealing to the lowest common denominator is not something to be admired. These are the same people that justified spending $200 million to make "Evan Almighty."

I think Marc just has no sense for "Art." Entertainment is to be viewed only as a "Commodity." Why would you look at a Van Gogh, when there are only a handful of those; can't you just get a "Dogs Playing Poker" down at Wal-Mart?

AND for the record, BOSTON is way smarter than Foreigner. Tom Scholz, the song-writer and lead guitarist has a Master's in Mechanical Engineering from M.I.T. He holds several patents for recording and audio processing equipment.

Sorry, i'm done venting. I still love the show (and Marc, i guess). I was definitly entertained.

I love BOSTON on a CD, but, they suck in concert.

Foreigner sounds AWESOME in concert and even 15 years after 'stepping' off the charts! (they never fell off the charts!)

Of course they suck in concert Dagney, it's pretty hard to get Brad Delp's corpse to hit those high notes, I'm shocked they even still dig him up each year when they tour.

I love how the first time Boston Andy freaks out it partially involves him defending the band Boston, hahahaha, he's right though they shouldn't be lumped in with the crappy arena rock of the time, they were alright, if one loves Queen then it's kinda ridiculous to shit on Boston.

Haha...yeah I may have gotten a wee bit carried away.

I also like tons of "mainstream" stuff. But i couldn't handle the equation of popular = good.

Upon listening again, I think Marc was just sitting in the "Antagonist Chair" for this episode. I know how much he loves his 2.5 Men, but I think he was mostly trying to get a rise out of Tod & John to make some "Hot Talk"

Mission accomplished! That had to have been my longest, most vitriolic msg. board post ever.

I would have loved to have heard Marc try and defend his position in the "Blue and Orange Garage." Next time, tell A.C. that "Abracadabra" by Steve Miller Band was better than The Clash in 1982

October 13, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAndy

Marc: "Its not on the radio so its not good music" AREYOUFUCKING KIDDING ME???? Its not good music if its ON the radio cuz radio stations play SHIT. All they play is bullshit, unlistenable rap music; shit sung by single white females who dance around like strippers more than they sing ; and crappy bullshit pop bands (a la JONAS BROTHERS) that little girls sans pubic hair think is good. "Popular music' is absolute SHIT. The ONLY radio stations you can hear good bands is College radio. I dont even turn the radio on.

other than that, fanastic ep.

Giovanni - COME ON! Dead guys can't sing OR dance and the smell lingers!

But WAY BACK WHEN, they DID suck in concert. Bad!
